Acetylene cylinder fire
by: Mark Payne

I now make it a practice to also check the acetylene cylinder valve for leaks when attaching the regulator to a full bottle. A couple of years ago, after installing a full bottle to the regulator and checking all other connections with soapy water, the students started welding with the torch. They started yelling fire, that is when I c*&^%ed my pants and saw the flame coming out of the top of the valve handle. I dosed the flame with a welding glove, turned off the cylinder and removed the cylinder from the shop.
I have also had those students that don't listen about frayed pants. One certain student caught his on fire and then dunked his whole foot into the 200 degree water in the quench tank. That'll learn ya.

Eyeglasses
by: Goldtrigger

For some of us who have to wear eye glasses, be mindful of the sparks flying off grinders or the welder and plastic lens glasses.

Eye glasses can cost big bucks and sparks flying off anything can embed in your lens and a ruin your eye glasses instantly!

Safety glasses for both your eyes and your glasses are a must!

steel toes
by: Festus

100% steel toes for protection, piece of 1/2 plate fell on my foot, the corner went right through my heavy leather boots and gashed my foot, You never think it will happen until it too late.

Burning feet
by: Darryl

No cloth top running shoes! I was welding a small project and was to lazy to change from my running shoes (I told myself no need to change since I would only be welding for a minute or two). Well, sparks started flying as I started welding and of course they also began burning through the tops of my shoes. Although I had no previous lessons, I instantly became an expert tap dancer!

ouchy moments
by: ms.t4teacher

great reading your "ouchy moments" will be passing them on to my students. last year had a student welding in a North Face winter jacket, would not take it off as the the room was to cold. the radient heat melted a hole through the nylon. note to self, follow teacher's instructionds.

Glad I could learn the easy way ( no pain) Another one I heard about. Ear plugs if there is ANY chance of hot metal getting into ear.

Thanks...

... for reminding us of these issues. Security is often ignored, one foolishly believe that "that not going to happen to me"
